Spurs fans have expressed significant dissatisfaction with the pricing and sales processes around season ticketing for the Club’s year at Wembley. And they have been putting forward their hopes for the new stadium. Almost two-thirds say price is the single most important factor that will influence their decision on renewing or purchasing tickets in the new ground, and fans also named the legends whose names they want to see included in the new stadium.
THST’s annual poll, now in its fourth year, was completed by over 3,200 fans. It opened on 23 June and closed on 9 July, before match day ticket pricing or the details of the ticket exchange were announced, so reaction to that is not included in the survey.
We asked existing Season Ticket holders if they were happy with the price of their ticket for the year at Wembley – only 38% were, with 41% dissatisfied. And 69% of them felt there should have been an amnesty for Season Ticket holders for the season at Wembley.
In an example of why the Club needs to articulate its decisions better, 60% of existing Season Ticket holders disagreed with the decision to remove the two cup vouchers from the ST pack. But 90% wanted THFC to offer a group stage Champions League pack again this season. One of the main reasons for detaching the cup vouchers from the season ticket package was to allow for more creativity with cup pricing and sales methods – including a group stage pack for Champions League games.
Just under half those surveyed, 49%, said they would be paying more to travel to Wembley than they had paid to get to Tottenham, with 20% saying their travel costs would be significantly increased.
Despite all this, 98% of season ticket holders had renewed their tickets for Wembley – and that’s the key figure as far as the Club is concerned.
Among Bronze members, just 24% were happy with the price of Season Tickets at Wembley, 48% wanted the two cup games retained, and 63% thought Bronze members should have been able to defer their option to take up a Season Ticket until the new stadium opens.
The survey found 42% of fans were satisfied with the way fans were migrated from White Hart Lane into Wembley, although that figure rises to 54% among Season Ticket holders.
Asked about plans for the new stadium, 68% of Season Ticket holders said price would be the most significant factor influencing their purchase decision, with 97% saying they wanted to renew. Just under half, 49%, felt the greater capacity should be used to bring down the cost of tickets, with just 7% wanting the primary purpose of the ticketing policy to be to increase revenue.
A majority were prepared to consider taking up multi-year ticket deals in the new ground, but only if a significant incentive was offered. The most popular option was having the ability to pay in instalments with the ticket price frozen for the duration of the deal.
When asked how priority for choosing seats at the new stadium should be decided among Season Ticket holders, ST holders felt longevity of holding a Season Ticket should carry the most weight, then positioning of seat at WHL, loyalty points and membership strand.
And fans are keen to see club heritage reflected in the new stadium, with 85% saying retaining tradition and heritage was important, and 63% wanting stands to be named after former players and managers. The four legends topping fans lists are Bill Nicholson, Jimmy Greaves, Danny Blanchflower and Ledley King.
